Root Concrete
is
design brought to concrete. . .
Terrazzo
Terrazzo originated in Italy in the 17th
century as flooring, but in a slightly different
form than as it is recognizable as today. Scrap
from marble quarries was laid out for patios or
terraces as a flagstone, and the joints in between
were filled with clay. The stones were subsequently
polished with goat’s milk to give them a shine.
Over the centuries, with the developments of
Portland cement, Carborundum, diamond tooling, and
more efficient quarrying techniques, terrazzo has
evolved into the ground and polished concrete floor
that it is today. It has become the longest lasting
and lowest maintenance floor for fine homes as well
as commercial spaces. Terrazzo also makes an
excellent and vibrant choice for countertops and
wall tile as well.
Root Concrete can build from new or match old or
damaged terrazzo in a restoration. We can also
employ terrazzo techniques for other manners of
dimensional castings.
Terrazzo can come in any color and can incorporate
the use of inlaid metal strips and other material to
create a design for a mural for a wall or floor.
